My ‘Hip Hop Nutcracker’ Experience Kicks off Holiday Season

by share

The “Hip Hop Nutcracker” was not only a fun and exciting experience, it was one I will never forget because I got the chance to go with my dad. The show was held at the Fox Theatre here in Atlanta on Nov. 26. Not only did I have the chance to go the theater with my dad, I was able to witness a show that had different types of dancing styles such as hip-hop, of course, and jazz, which kept the crowd entertained. And I had the opportunity to meet new people!

When the show began, the crowd bubbled with energy when legendary emcee/rapper of the “The Breaks” Kurtis Blow graced the stage with a performance of his own. The energy and the dancing in the room was completely incredible from both the performers and the crowd, especially performers Allauné Blegbo, who played the mom, Micah Abbrey who played the dad, and Josue Figueroa who played the nutcracker.

The storyline was about a daughter whose parents were fighting a lot, and she got to go back in time with the nutcracker to see how deeply in love they used to be with one another.

It was nice to be able to see such a diverse cast, inviting people of different races and ethnicities to dance with one another to help get in the festive spirit. The show hadn’t even started when I could already see it was a great way to kick off the holiday season.

Not only was the show very creative dance-wise, it came with a storyline that some teens could relate to — and wasn’t hard to follow at that. The performance put its own twist on the classic 1892 Tchaikovsky ballet “The Nutcracker,” and we had great seats! The performers were a talented group, and I can say I most definitely enjoyed it and would recommend people to see this show!
